I am so excited for my trip!!!
We are going to York, England which has an extensive history of over 2,000 years. And if you know anything about me, you could probably guess that I've already researched a bit about the history of this old town.
York was founded by the Romans long ago when they took over a Celtic tribe in the area and build an official fortress. It withstood the Anglo-Saxon era and gained its Christian identity for the first time. This religion influenced the entire city as it became a political capital and a major hub for education and art.
Next, the Vikings (who gave the city it's modern day name) took over the city and allowed it to really prosper, while keeping the largely Christian culture. Under their rule, the new capital of the kingdom became a major trading hub and included a big mint for Norse coins.
After the Viking era ended, the city was still vital to the growing English kingdom. It hosted a few battles under William the Conqueror's command in the Norman Conquest and rebuild even stronger when it was torn apart by these. The city served as a stronghold in the English Civil War and became an important railway hub in the Industrial Revolution.
Each of these eras have heavily contributed to the identity of York today. Many streets still hold the Nordic meaning and houses and walls build for early English royalty still stand along the streets.
I am sooo excited to see and experience life in a city many times older than our entire country. It will be such an eye opening experience to how other people live and act (and talk).
Most of all, I am looking forward to seeing how the Christian faith has influenced culture over the years and hopefully play a part in bringing back that reliance and faith in God.
I did not mean to turn this into a history lesson but I am eager to see some of this history first hand.
Thank you for reading!
